Keep it balanced, pan as many left as you do right. The lead vocal should be in mono and central in the mix but the BVs can have as much width as you like. They should complement the lead vocals, they need to be more ambient and less 'in your face' than the lead. Keeping this in consideration, Should lead vocals be in mono or stereo? Moreover, recording vocals in mono makes them sound powerful, clear, and upfront. However, if you record two vocalists or more or if you record in a room with unique acoustics, the vocals should be stereo. If you record one vocalist, your vocals should be mono.
